Summer

Today for the first time I walked outside and felt like we were out of winter. God knows why I only felt it now, but as I said, it feels like Christmas was only yesterday. The blue of the sky had an extra depth to it today, the pale blue of spring has long gone.

Went into town with Rob and bought lunch in the Peg. Cheeseburger chips and J20 for £4. Nice. Then bought a Business textbook from Waterstones for £26, because I was interested. A bit frivolous I know, but I am sure I won't have an opportunity to be next year so enjoy it while I can.

6-0 England

Well what a nice surprise. I honestly expected us to struggle, prompting the usual pre-tournament "we're not good enough!". But look at the players we have: Ferdinand, Terry, Beckham, Gerrard, Lampard, Owen, and potentially Rooney. All players that are viewed in world cirlces, as being world class. We can do it, come on England!

I forgot to mention in my previous blogs that I had two more companies contact me yesterday re: my job applications. Debenhams HQ phoned me, and interviewed me on the phone for 15 minutes, before saying they would pass the application down to the store I have applied to, that being Chelmsford. The position is for Supervisor on the Ladieswear department, which is very big so that would be a nice challenge.

The other job was with TM Retail, the same people who own Martins Newsagents, Dillons etc, for a 3 month contract as a Seasonal Supervisor. From what I gather, the job invovles going to stores while the store manager is on holiday, and keep things ticking over. She said she would speak to her Area Manager and get back to me, so that sounds promising as well! Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Hey, ho, come on England!

England against Jamaica today, come on England! Before Euro 2004, our last game was Iceland we won 6-1. Although I don't expect such a big win today, a convincing victory would be good. Reports suggest that Carragher will fill in for the injured Neville at right back, and Crouch to be put back up front instead of the holding midfielder role. 4-4-2, sounds a bit better to me. Hopefully Owen can bag a few.

Everyone is going to slowly start filtering back from University over the next couple of weeks, huraah. If people actually spend some time with their friends this time rather than spending every waking minute with their partner, that would be brilliant. Even better, if when we meet up they actually speak to us rather than eating their partners face, that would be pretty awesome. Can't wait to see everyone though, just that my expectations aren't that high.

June....already?

Okay slightly scary, we are nearly halfway through the year already! What the hell? Christmas was only yesterday wasn't it? What has happened to all the time in between?

Bloody Land Rover

Well I had my job interview with Land Rover today, and am a bit cheesed off to be honest. There is no job, not for at least a few weeks, they're just "shortlisting people". Wonderful. Plus, throughout the interview, the woman sat there and told me that I was too good for the job, and that actually I should try working for Marks & Spencers. Geez, thanks. Surely they would want someone as good as me working for them?

Feeling a tad ill at the moment, think I caught Emma's cold. I don't feel as bad as my last bout, and hopefully, fingers crossed, it is only in passing. I wouldn't mind the sudden weightloss that came with the last one though!

I have come to the conclusion that my visit to Jo's last week was the best spell of 4 days I have had. Not only did I get to spend some time with Jo (yay!) which is always wonderful, and go to a wonderful club (Isis), but I also made a new friend in Ruth, Jo's best mate. She's so cool, it is nice to talk to someone who you seem to have a lot in common with. Plus, someone who isn't a complete and utter nutter. Kind of balances me out!

Finally, I command you to listen to some music by The Storys, particularly their song 'Is It True What They Say About Us', it's a bit like country gospel rock. I love, it they're amazing, and growing on me every day. Doooo it! :-)

Bored already

It is only my 3rd day I have actually spent at home since resigning from my job as a Trainee Manager at ASDA, yet I am already bored out of my mind! I have an interview with Land Rover Wednesday, and I really hope I get the job because I do not like lounging around the house with no purpose in life. I guess my job reflected the sort of person I am: quick tempo, time pressured, target driven. I love having something to achieve, and then I always feel empty once I achieve it. The chase better than the goal?

I have tried twice now to sit down and listen through the Chilis new album 'Stadium Arcadium'. It is a double disc, but I cannot make it through one CD without switching onto something else. It isn't bad music, but their style grates on me after a while and I crave variation. They're all good songs, but not something I would be able to immerse myself in, nor a band I would wish to see in concert.

End internet censorship - sign the pledge

I read an article in The Observer today, which has made me passionate about the topic of internet censorship. Obviously there are two sides to every story, but it becomes immediately clear that countries such as China, Thailand, Iran and Israel all censor the internet. I am all for each country being run in the way that it is run, as I am not saying that the British capitalist way of life is the right way - there is no right way. But a country should arrive at it's means through everyone's view being held important. If the people of a country vote for Communism, fantastic. But debate and sharing of experiences should not be censored: least of all on the internet, which was made for that same purpose.

Please go to www.irrepressible.info and sign the pledge. Support our friends around the world.

Well travelled

I feel extremely well travelled today. I arrived back from Nottingham at 2.30 yesterday afternoon, a 3 hour drive consisting of much rain and clouds. What horrible driving weather. As Jo pointed out though, the spray coming off the road is rather mystical. Along the M11 it was particularly bad, and seeing as I was travelling slower than everyone else for the reasons of fuel economy and safety, many cars looked like they simply disappeared into this haze of spray and fog further up the road. Spooky.

Nottingham was lovely. I drove up there Wednesday and arrived without any hitches, apart from a slight detour (entirely planned I am sure.....) through the city centre. A bit scary but I coped. The weather absolutely gorgeous that day, and when Jo showed me around campus it really was a marvel of greenery. Any students wishing to go to a green campus Uni, Nottingham is the one for you! The only downside to me was that they had no student union club, but the city makes up for that with some gems of a night out. The campus bar, The Ark, was quite run down, but the prices seemed affordable and there was a good atmosphere in there!

Wednesday night we went out to a club about 20 minutes walk away, Isis, and what a club! Modern, very open and bright, and with a huge dancefloor, this was probably the best club I have been in. Unlike our resident Chelmsford club Dukes, there was a real nice variety of music being played. Don't get me wrong, I love a bit of trance and dance, but it is awesome to have some up tempo indie rock which I actually know the words to. Songs like 'Mr.Brightside' (The Killers) and 'I Bet That You Look Good On The Dancelfoor (Arctic Monkeys) bring everyone together and create an awesome atmosphere. Real feel good music.

Thursday night we went to the cinema, just opposite Isis, and we saw Uma Thurman's new film. If I am honest I cannot remember the name of the film, but that does reflect my views on it. The plot follows a 23 year old man who meets a 37 year old woman, and the various problems their relationship crosses. The twist is that the woman's shrink, is the man's Mum, and the shrink knows what is going on between them without the couple knowing it. Billed as a comedy, you would expect laughs a minute such as 'Meet The Parents', but instead the humour is a little less explicit, more akin to 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind'. I won't give away the ending, but it left me feeling a little let down. Jo's friend Ruth summed it up nicely when we left: "they did a lot of talking".

During the day we also explored the city centre. Another lovely day showed Nottingham in a good light, and pretty much every big name is English retail is there, along with many independents down the many back streets. Noticeable was the number of Subways (sandwich shop) and Starbucks there are, and I do sometimes worry we are turning into corporate America, but it was a nice day out. A pair of jeans from Next (now all 3 of my jeans come from there), as well as another CD (see below) and my bank account once again looks slightly smaller.

Friday was the day the shit hit, and the skies emptied. We hopped on the train to Loughborough, where I shall be going to Uni next year. A small town, but there was more there than expected (including a Subway). I was pleased to note a large Sainsbury's nearby the campus, as well as a Somerfield. Neither of them are as cheap as somewhere like Asda, but at least there is an alternative to the Union shop, which although I did not examine, I am sure will be scandalously expensive. In the evening we were pumped and queued up outside the in-town club, Ocean, but alas, it was full. A night of merryness but non-eventfulness in Lloyds later, and a quick burger van quarter pounder, and bed beckoned.

As regards the aforementioned CDs, I appear to have bought a lot of them recently, oops. It does, however, take my list of songs (all legally bought and owned) to 2064. Rock on. Here is the list of what I have bought in the past week, and I shall be reviewing some of them shortly.

VARIOUS ARTISTS: Hard House Classics
3 DOORS DOWN: Away From The Sun
THE STORYS: The Storys
LIVE: Songs From Black Mountain (Import)
RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS: Stadium Arcadium
SAVES THE DAY: Sound The Alarm
VARIOUS ARTISTS: The Very Best of Euphoric Dance Breakdown
THE OPEN: Statues

Surrey, trains and big feck off monsters

After my leaving my job last week, I decided to head on down to jolly old Guildford in Surrey and visit my friend Emma at University. Lovely. I needed a time to just chill out and that is what I have got, huraah.

The train journey down was rather uneventful and indifferent. Nothing was blown up, no one killed. However, the Northern line was closed which rather hindered my progress, especially as I didn't check before setting out on the Underground, and when I got to Tottenham Court Road I was most surprised to see barriers hindering my path. Ah well, it all led to much good humane faith, as a random French girl (probably about my age) asked for directions, and me helping her, I forgot where I was going, and got on the wrong train with her. Oops. Muppet.

It also strikes me how much ncier trains are in some regions compared to others. South West Trains are so much nier than one Anglia trains, and when walking down the platform I didn't get on for a long time because I thoguht they were all first class carriages! It is a shame that these trains are so nice whilst others are so rundown. Maybe if the rail system hadn't been privatised we would at least have a consistent standard across the country rather than this mishmash.

After visiting Emma, I myself cannot wait to go to Uni in September (Management Sciences at Loughborough). Everyone seems a lot more carefree and nonchalant than those I have worked with. Drinking prevails, huraah, and the accomodation actually isn't too bad. A little small, but I would get used to it. It will be nice just to be independent. From what I have seen there isn't much of an atmosphere on campus, but then it has been raining all weekend so I think that can be forgiven. I know there will be no such problem at Loughborough - I have heard the Union is immense!

In town yesterday I bought another 3 CDs, taking my total to 5 in 3 days. This includes Live, Saves The Day, The Storys, 3 Doors Down and The Open. I love Live and 3 Doors Down, and I saw Saves The Day supporting Ash a couple of years ago and they were alright. I have, however, never heard of the other 2. I just wanted something new, and I rather liked the cover art (which is after all part of the package).

The Storys are pretty sweet. It verges on gospel, and a lot of it is soppy, but the singer has a lovely pure voice and it is upkifting if you are in the mood for it. The Opens are a bit more random as they seem to go from instrumental experimentation, to hard rock from one track to the next. But it might grow on me.

And well done Finland for winning the Eurovision Song Contest with a bunch of death metal alien monster rockers. Glad that we're not taking the competition TOO seriously anymore. If that eclectic collection of songs was the best this continent could produce, I would be worried.

New chapter

So Friday I handed in my notice, and I am leaving my position of Frozen Food Manager at Asda Chelmer Village. I will be sad to leave, as I have so many great friends there and I will miss them terribly. However, the atmosphere in that place at the moment is just not conducive to furthering my career, and if I am honest, I feel agrieved that I am doing a manager's job and being paid only £5.58 an hour for it. Grrrrrrrrrr.

I only have two more shifts left, and Thursday is my last day. After that, I will technically still be employed by ASDA (yay discount card!) but I will be a seasonal colleague, which basically means that I need only work 10 weeks a year. I won't be back until Christmas. A much needed break from the place I must say.

Friday (the day after, obviously), I have two job interviews! One is with Lookers Land Rover for the position of Service Administrator, with a salary of around £14-15K. Nice! And it is even closer to my house than ASDA, so secretly, that is the job I really want. I also have another interview at a Recruitment Company in Rayleigh, on behalf of a Marketing Company. The salary there is just £12K, and it is further to travel, but the work sounds more interesting.

Considering that I am going to Uni in October though, does it really matter?

Yes, I am going to University in October! Uni of Loughborough to do Management Sciences, excited yet nervous. Will be odd leaving my 'comfort zone', especially after a year's break from education. On the otherhand, I cannot wait. The subject generally interests me, and I think that after a year of being a manager myself the course will be a lot more relevant. Nervous that I am going into the unknown though.

What with leaving my job, and moving halfway across the country on my own, it really is a new start. COME ON!

We're back!

Well, Gran Canaria was amazing and quite possibly the best two weeks of my life. I do apologise for the lateness of this post (I only remembered because Clare badgered me!), but I am still coming off of the high! To be away from all of life's pressures in a seeming paradise was brilliant I do feel totally refreshed as a result.

I cannot possibly detail everything that happened, because not only would it take forever but I really cannot remember everything that we did. The two weeks seemed to simultaneously fly by, yet also last for ages. So here are some of the things that I remember!

-On the day of departure at Stansted Airport, my Starbucks hot chocolate had a split lid so spilt on my white t-shirt before we had even got into the air. The next night I would ruin my other white t-shirt my getting pasta on it. Oops.

-The flight out was brilliant. It was a night flight so you could not always see much, but take off was the usual adrenalin rush. Feeling this plane power down the runway is something I could get addicted to. There were two amazing sights in mid-air: when you blocked out the lights of the cabin you could see the most incredible view of the nightsky. And at one point, over what we think was Portugal, you could make out a massive city, and what looked like a suspension bridge.  Most of the flight though I was trying to distract Clare from her immense nerves. Bless.

-The hotel rooms we were given at first were, to be blunt, shite. When we got into our rooms at 4 in the morning, Emma started shouting at the receptionist for some reason, something to do with the safe not working properly. The next day we discovered that our 'pool view' was actually of the next hotel's pool, that the "no building work" actually meant lots of workmen's tools on Jo/Tom's balcony, constant lifting of heavy equipment past their balcony. Two of the apartment doors were very very stiff, and in the case of our room we actually had to get the lock changed at one point because it broke. To tip it all off, yours truly got LOCKED IN THE BATHROOM! I was stuck in it for 20 mins, and because I had the key no one could even get into the apartment. I tried pulling the door down, kicking the door down, and in the end resorted to just shouting as loud as I could. Even the hotel staff couldn't get the lock to work and so they spent 5 mins kicking the door down. Much to Rob's amusement. We requested a room change, thankfully we got it and had no more problems!

-I spent most days lounging by the pool, reading and listening to my iPod. I read many books and I shall review them in a separate post. The swimming pool was lovely, nice and cool, which was good seeing as the temperature on the beach one day amassed to a whooping 47 according to the themometer! Despite my best wishes, I barely tanned and my hair did not bleach. Grr.

-For my 18th birthday, myself, Rob, Jo and Tom went out for a 70's night. In the very English 'Rooneys Bar' we were given the best food of the holiday: potato wedges and nuggets. I cannot describe how lovely it was, possibly worth the 30 Euros alone haha. Then we went onto a club called The Cube. Now, it was advertised as an Open Bar, which is a bit naughty really seeing as you could not have non-alcoholic drinks, and any form of bottled drink such as alcopops was also banned. So really, it was just spirits. The drinks, were, bluntly, disgusting. In Gran Canaria they fill the glass about 2/3 full with spirit, the equivalent of a quadruple most likely. So I figure that night I had 24 measures of vodka, and god knows how much malibu Rob drank. It was just the most amazing night, dancing it all away with a drink in my left hand and my right hand doing some kind of spastic dance. I don't care what I looked like it was the best night out ever and whenever I feel depressed I just remember that night. Much to everyone elses amusement, I think I suffered the effects worse, as shown by stumbling through the door of the apartment, sliding against the wall and collapsing on the floor. I was drinking the water faster than Clare could pour it!

-It was also Rachel's 18th while we were there, and we all went to a nice Italian restaurant just down the road.

-We had two favourite drinking haunts. One was Crazy Harry's, and Harry really was Crazy! Everything was so cheapbecause he was the only member of staff: as he said in his Spanish accent, "get pissed for a tenner!" he had a great offer of two cocktails for five Euros, and Blue Lagoon was my favourite: had this lovely Blue Curcao spirit in it.

-Our other favourite bar was Wembleys. Yes, another English bar. This was because it contained "egg head", the resident DJ Terry Bull who we assumed is just a floating head. It was just cringe worthy. When we walked into the bar he saw Rob's shirt and played "i'm too sexy for my shirt", and started referring to our table as "England". He is a racist little (well, big) shit, his comedy sketches were not funny, and the funniest thing he did was mime to a Radio 1 sketch about Shaggy. In fact he was so bad we kept going back just to laugh at him! I think the song "wanker with white socks" has become a cult hit with Rob!

-Talking of Rob, in our favourite restaurant the Olympia, the first time we went we got a complimentary bottle of champagne. Rob being Rob sneakily took it with him, and no one noticed he had it until we were half way back to the hotel! This led to the unfortunate episode of Rob waking up in the morning in our bedroom and swigging the flat champagane...disgusting.

It was just in general a great experience. I apologise to the holiday crew if I forgot anything funny, do remind me and I will update! To finish, a story of Rob's cooking. On the first day, he thought that he would empty the whole packet of pasta, the whole jar of sauce, and grate cheese with a knife. It was absolutely vile, and led to the rise to prominence of the word "mushy". This word would over the next two weeks become overused with other buzz words such as "awkward", "Emma stop it" and "egg head".

Gran Canaria here I come!

Won't be posting for a while. My plane leaves in 6 hours, and I will not be back until July 26th. In two days I shall be 18 so think of me! And earlier Clare and I danced in the middle of Pollards.

I am sensitive

ColourQuiz.com is a website where you select colours, and at the end of it you are informed of your personality. Apparently it is a well used technique by psychologists, and it does seem to go beyond the standard "red=angry" and "black=gothic tendencies". Apparently I am

"Sensitive; needs esthetic surroundings, or an equally sensitive and understanding partner with whom to share a warm intimacy."

Well that isn't too bad! At least it doesn't think I am an axe murderer. In fact, the whole bit about warm intimacy and understanding partner is probably very accurate.

Onto my 'Stress Situation', and ColourQuiz.com thinks "Feels that life must yield more than it is and that his hopes and desires must somehow be realized--that they must be granted in their entirety. The existing uncertainty causes considerable worry and he is tensely on his guard against missing any opportunity. Anxious to avoid further setbacks, and loss of standing or prestige. Tries to make sure that he will not be overlooked and badly needs security."

Very true!

And my restrained characteristics?

"Circumstances force him to compromise and to forgo some pleasures for the time being. Capable of achieving physical satisfaction from sexual activity. Circumstances are forcing him to compromise, to restrain his demands and hopes, and to forgo for the time being some of the things he wants."

The sexual activity thing isn't true (sadly), but I do feel that I do forgo some of my desires so 50% there. Desired objective?

"Strives for a life rich in activity and experience, and for a close bond offering sexual and emotional fulfillment"

Again, very true and accurate. However, I would say that do most people not want this out of life also? And so my apparent psychological problem?

"The fear that he might be prevented from achieving the things he wants leads him to play his part with an urgent and hectic intensity."

Very true. Any people who worked my evening shifts on Checkouts know that I don't do half measures, I do everything at breakneck pace. Oh, wait, apparently ColourQuiz thinks I have 2 problems...

"Disappointment and the fear that there is no point in formulating fresh goals have led to stress and anxiety. He wants congenial contact with others and scope for development, but feels that his relationships are empty and his progress impeded. He reacts with an intense and zealous activity designed to achieve his aims at all costs."

Well that is nice.

Work was ok. We have a new colleague, Becca, and very nice she is too. Easy to get along with and a laugh which is good, the family-esque environment continues! I may not always like the customers but I get on really well with the majority of the colleagues so at least work is humorous. 48 hours and I will be on a plane to Gran Canaria. Ooooh yeah!

And on Wednesday I will be 18. Not that any of you bar 7 will be able to see me, so maybe just a little prayer to my health will do!

Day after the day before

Compared to yesterday everything seemed relatively normal today. Went down the park with Clare, Tori, Ian and John which was good fun, particularly the eccentric randomness of John buy a multipack of cereal and us manging to eat it all (or dispose of it via dropkicking)! We have also established that I have long hearing - music in my ear seems really quiet even when on full volume yet talk about me from across the park and I will hear every word. Or so the theory goes.

Work was interesting. There are normally just 3 of us in on a Friday night anyway, but Louise went home sick at 7 leaving just myself and Laura. This was particularly interesting when we went on our half hour breaks, leaving the other to struggle on their own. At one point I was serving a customer with a particularly long selection of items, and the phone would not stop ringing! We are not meant to answer the phone whilst serving, so for a few minutes I ignored it. Then the receptionist said on the tannoy "can a George colleague please go to the George desk. Telephone call!" and I almost shouted at the ceiling. Might they not have figured that after a few minutes of ringing maybe we were unavailable at that moment in time and asked the customer to ring back? The phone is deafening so it's not like we wouldn't have heard it!

On top of that the department was a mess as usual, with customers taking things from one rail and returning to another, just dropping things on the floor, and taking things out of a packet and not being assed to put them back in. Lovely jubbly.

Just started reading 'The Five People You Meet in Heaven'. Very touching introduction about the day the old man dies. It constantly refers to time as 'sixteen minutes before he died', perhaps suggesting that everything in life is pre-determined and we have no choices? I think I am going to enjoy this one.

Finally, iPod update, about 4/5ths of my music collection uploaded, making 1240 songs, 3.5 days of listening time and 4.6GBs of disk space. Wooo.

Past two days

On more positive ground, the past two days have been quite good forgetting the tragic events of today. I worked 12-10 at work yesterday, another fairly quiet day spent mainly marking down items for sale. It is amazing though how the second you take a rail of clothes onto the shop floor, customers gather round. Even if it is just new stock of a new product already out they will cluster round. I think this is mainly because customers are eager to find anything which might be reduced. Very sad. Even when I tell customers that they are not being reduced and are available elsewhere they still make a mess of my rail! Grr!

Went into town this morning, and apart from getting a new dashing haircut (!), a travel adaptor so I can plug my iPod in on holiday, and 3 more books. I will probably take them all to Gran Canaria with me so that should keep me going for two weeks. I'll give you a brief synopsis of the three:

THE FIVE PEOPLE YOU MEET IN HEAVEN: An old man dies, but instead of going to the Garden of Eden he meet five people, who have had some significant impact on his life, and they explain his Earthly being to him.

THE ALGEBRAIST: A Sci-Fi set in 4034AD when humans live on stars. As his military religious group search for a secret, the Universe comes closer and closer to war.

DAYDREAM GIRL: About a woman who runs an independent cinema and wants to be a film script writer. When a third script is rejected and a bid comes in for the cinema her livelihood appears to be in jeopardy.

A nice range of books there. :)

Tragic

I found the events today in London very sad. We've all been aware of the terrorism attacks on the globe in the past few years, but having it brought much closer to home has made it so much more real. I know of so many people who have been affected by this that it brings a whole new perspective on it. The acts itself didn't particularly surprise me, as because of our alliance with America we were always going to be a target. And I guess with G8 starting we shouldn't be entirely surprised by the timing. And who knows how many potential terrorism attacks that MI5 and intelligence agencies have stopped in the past. Well done to the emergency services as it looks like they did their job spectacularly well. Lets hope that this is the last of it all, that the city can try and carry on as normal, and that as many people affected can have a full recovery. Long live the memories of the deceased.

Asda cuts 1,000 jobs

From bbc.co.uk....

"Asda has said that it expects to cut 1,000 jobs as part of a review of its staffing levels.

A total of 185 management posts are to go at its main head office in Leeds and 15 at its second centre in Lutterworth.

A further four to five management positions are to go at each store, affecting 1,200 people, but the company expects 400 of these to be redeployed."

That's a bit shit. My manager said last week he would put me on a management development scheme. Fat chance of that now?

FUCKBOLLOCKSSHITDAMNIT!

The last episode of '24' was on tonight. I have watched all other 23 episodes in the series. I missed the last one. Bollocks.

Useless information about me

I have had a fairly good day. Was told at the Orthodontist that my brace is coming off Thursday 18th August, yay, I shall have my confident smile back! Expect me to be smiling for all eternity! Work was also great. I love assy stuck up middle class customers.

"Where are your purple ties?"
"Well all we have is in front of you I am afraid. There is a purple one in the middle row to the left."
"Ohhhhh that?! That isn't purple, that's LILAC!"

Like the difference means anything, stuck up woman. You may think you are posh and important, but you're buying your clothes in *ASDA*!!! Anyway, another survey Clare willed me to take..
